Silvassa's economy runs on plastics. Over 3,500 small and medium factories churn out plastic products—packaging, containers, consumer goods—shipped across India at prices competitors can't match. The tax-free status (a Union Territory perk) makes this possible. A floating workforce of 200,000, mostly from UP, Bihar, and Odisha, powers the factories. If you're not in manufacturing, supply chain, or logistics, job options thin fast. Remote work or freelancing is the realistic path for most expats here.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs $95/month; you'll find decent apartments for $120–150. Transport is auto-rickshaws and your own scooter—no metro, no Uber. Healthcare exists but quality varies sharply; serious issues mean 130 km to Surat or 160 km to Mumbai. Hindi and Gujarati dominate; English is sparse outside educated circles. Bureaucracy for residency is standard Indian friction: visas, registrations, bank accounts all require patience and documentation. Monsoons (June–September) flood streets regularly.

Summers are brutal (40°C+), monsoons are wet, winters are mild. Food is Gujarati and North Indian—good if you like that, limiting otherwise. The expat community is tiny and transient; most residents are Indian factory workers. Weekends mean trips to Daman beach (30 km), Surat's malls, or Mumbai if you have time. Silvassa suits remote workers with low cost-of-living priorities and tolerance for industrial-town grit, not those seeking expat social infrastructure or lifestyle amenities.
