Rosignol, Guyana
This tiny port town on the Berbice River is a hub for bus travel, but little else. The population of around 3,000 is split between people of Indian and African descent, and employment opportunities are limited to the nearby Blairmont Estate and a handful of local businesses. Residents must contend with a persistent bureaucracy, as evidenced by the town's three schools and two banks. While Rosignol once boasted cinemas, a disco, and even a gas station, those bygone attractions have dwindled, leaving little to recommend the village beyond its role as a transit point. If you're looking for a quiet, no-frills outpost to pass through on your way to more vibrant parts of Guyana, Rosignol may fit the bill - but little else.
