Achern, Germany

Living in southwestern Germany's Rhine Valley doesn't get much more accessible than this mid-sized hub of 26,664 residents. With direct access to the A5 autobahn and rail service to both Karlsruhe and Basel, Achern functions as the practical center of the northern Ortenau district while maintaining its small-merchant economy.

The city's strategic location 18km from Baden-Baden puts residents within striking distance of bigger-city amenities while benefiting from relatively lower costs in this predominantly Catholic community. Though historically bouncing between various ruling powers including Baden, Strasbourg and Austria, modern Achern has evolved into a practical service center with district courts, hospitals, and both college-track and vocational education options.

Despite two major fires in 1495 and 1637 that once left it temporarily abandoned, Achern rebuilt and now encompasses eight distinct boroughs. While its medieval St. Nikolaus Chapel remains the city's symbol, pragmatic infrastructure investments like the Autobahn exit, commuter rail station and bus network have positioned it as a livable compromise between rural charm and urban convenience.
