Abensberg, Germany
Living costs run significantly lower than Munich, but don't expect big city amenities in this modest Bavarian town of 14,685 residents. Located 100km north of Bavaria's capital, Abensberg sits along the Abens River and has transformed from medieval stronghold to a modern agricultural hub.
The town's economy revolves around two major crops: asparagus and hops. The surrounding "sand belt" hosts 300 hectares of premium asparagus fields, while the area's hops production is so significant that Abensberg marks the starting point of the Deutsche Hopfenstraße (German Hops Road). Three independent breweries still operate here, with the Kuchlbauer Brewery and its quirky Hundertwasser-designed observation tower drawing tourists.
For American expats, the infrastructure is solid if basic - you're connected to major cities via the Regensburg-Ingolstadt railway and the A-93 autobahn. The historic center retains parts of its medieval wall with 32 round towers, offering authentic German small-town living. But be warned: this is deeply traditional Bavaria, where shops still close on Sundays and the annual Gillamoos fair in September is considered the social highlight of the year.
