Barcelona vs Fentange: Which City Wins for Expats in 2026?

Barcelona draws expats with its excellent healthcare, large and active expat community, and a digital nomad visa requiring only $1,627/mo, but the numbers paint a sobering picture: the average monthly net salary of $2,248 barely exceeds the budget tier cost of $2,100, and a one-bedroom in the city center runs $1,671/mo. The safety index sits at 72/100 with a crime index of 28, yet the cost of living index of 58/100 relative to NYC does not translate into affordability when local wages are this low. For digital nomads who clear the visa income floor, Barcelona offers a strong expat score of 80/100, but anyone paid a local salary will find little room to save after covering rent and basic expenses.

Fentange is a quiet, safe bedroom community that makes sense only if you already have a Luxembourg City salary. The $2,072 monthly rent for a one-bedroom outside the center is steep for a village of 3,000 people, and the $2,129 budget-tier total leaves little room for error. You get excellent healthcare and a high safety index, but the small expat community and limited English proficiency mean you will need French or German to function. Unless you are a retiree with the $2,571 monthly income to qualify for the residence permit, this is a tough sell for nomads, who face a mediocre 60/100 score.
