With a population of just 122,866, León is a sleepy Spanish city that offers little for the modern expat. The medieval charms of the cathedral and historic buildings are undeniable, but the harsh winters and heavy bureaucracy are a persistent headache. Locals take great pride in their Leonese language and traditions, but this insular culture can be tough to crack for outsiders. Unless you're a devoted pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago or a connoisseur of Romanesque architecture, León is unlikely to satisfy the needs of most Americans seeking a new life abroad.
