Mauritius is no paradise for the average expat. With only 98% of the 2,772 km of roads paved, transportation is a constant headache. The island's public bus network has around 220 lines, but good luck finding an integrated ticketing system. And while the first flight landed here in 1922, the national airline Air Mauritius has struggled to keep up with growing demand. Bureaucracy is a persistent problem, with the National Land Transport Authority overseeing everything from vehicle registration to parking enforcement. For all its natural beauty, Mauritius seems designed to frustrate the foreign resident. This island is best suited for the hardy expat who craves a challenge.
