North India's IT corridor runs through here more than most people outside the country realize. Lucknow hosts a growing cluster of software and tech firms — Infosys, TCS, and HCL all have a presence — alongside aerospace, pharma research (the Central Drug Research Institute is a genuine institution), and automobile manufacturing that's been expanding steadily. IIM Lucknow and IIIT Lucknow feed a steady pipeline of educated locals into white-collar work, which keeps salaries competitive but also means the job market rewards credentials heavily. Remote workers and digital nomads can operate here cheaply; local employment without Hindi fluency is a harder sell.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $260/month, and you can do better outside central areas. Street food costs almost nothing; a full meal at a mid-range restaurant is $3–6. Getting around means auto-rickshaws, app-based cabs (Ola and Uber both work), or the Lucknow Metro, which covers key corridors but not the whole city. Healthcare is a mixed picture — private hospitals like Medanta are genuinely good, but public facilities are overcrowded. Bureaucracy for visa extensions and residency paperwork is slow and Hindi-dependent; budget time and patience, or hire a local fixer.

Summers are brutal — 40–45°C from May into June — and the monsoon brings humidity and flooding in low-lying areas. Winters (December–February) are mild and genuinely pleasant. The food scene is the real draw: Lucknow's UNESCO City of Gastronomy designation isn't marketing fluff — the kebabs, biryanis, and street food culture here are exceptional and deeply local. The expat community is small, concentrated mostly around corporate postings and academic institutions, so social life integrates with Indian colleagues or stays fairly solitary. This city suits cost-conscious remote workers or FIRE-seekers who want urban infrastructure, serious food culture, and low overhead — and can handle heat and Hindi.
