The historic city center sits on an island in the Freiberger Mulde river, but the surrounding hilly landscape offers little in the way of natural beauty. Bureaucratic headaches are a persistent issue, as the town has changed hands numerous times over the centuries, with 17th century Swedish plundering and 18th century Prussian occupation leaving a legacy of red tape.
