Yumbo, Colombia
With a population of just 92,192, Yumbo is a small, industrial outpost in western Colombia. The city is known for its concrete plants and air pollution, which paints a rather grim picture for prospective residents. Adding to the challenges, Yumbo has a tropical savanna climate that is "extremely foggy and sunless" - not exactly the idyllic Colombian lifestyle many expats envision.
On the plus side, the city is home to a campus of the prestigious Universidad del Valle, and a new $175 million brewery from SABMiller will provide employment for around 200 people. But the overall sense is one of a working-class town, rather than a vibrant cultural center.
Yumbo is likely best suited for those drawn to its industrial character, or who value proximity to the larger city of Cali over scenic beauty or creature comforts.
