Zizhuang, China

With a population of just over 52,000, Zizhuang is a modest and unremarkable city in China's interior. The artist Chen Zizhuang, who taught at the local university, lived and died in poverty here. While his work has since been rediscovered and praised, the reality on the ground is that Zizhuang offers little to attract foreign residents beyond bureaucratic headaches.
