The reality is that Zhaojia is a small, unremarkable Chinese city with a population of just 39,910. Bureaucracy is a persistent headache, as the government has long maintained a heavy-handed approach to suppressing any perceived anti-communist sentiment. While the city has largely avoided the political turmoil seen elsewhere, its stagnant economy and drab urban environment offer little to attract foreign residents.
