Agriculture and forestry dominate Yuexi's economy—tea cultivation, timber, and subsistence farming employ most residents. There's minimal formal job market for outsiders; the county seat (Tiantang Town) has basic government and service roles, but no multinational offices or tech hubs. If you're not teaching English or running a remote business, earning locally is nearly impossible. This is genuinely rural China, not a digital nomad destination.

Rent runs $80–150/month for a basic apartment; food costs $150–250 monthly if you cook. Healthcare exists but serious issues require travel to Anqing (90km away). Mandarin is essential—English is rare even among younger people. Bureaucracy for residence permits is standard Chinese friction: expect multiple office visits and unclear timelines. Public buses connect to Highway 318, but having a scooter or car is practical. Internet is reliable enough for remote work.

Winters are cold and damp; summers humid and warm. Weekends mean hiking the surrounding mountains, visiting local tea farms, or day-tripping to larger towns. The expat community is essentially nonexistent—you'll be the only foreigner for miles. Food is authentic Anhui cuisine: heavy on preserved vegetables, river fish, and tea. This suits only remote workers or teachers seeking genuine rural immersion, not people seeking expat infrastructure or social life.
