Xinxing's economy is almost entirely state-controlled agriculture and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC), which still co-governs the city despite its 2021 municipal status. Employment means either farming operations, state-owned enterprises, or government positions—there's no private sector to speak of. This is subsistence-level economic activity in a planned economy, not a place where remote workers or entrepreneurs build businesses.

Rent runs $200–400/month for basic apartments; utilities are cheap. The real friction: Xinxing is a brand-new city with minimal expat infrastructure, no English signage, and Mandarin is essential—Uyghur is also spoken but won't help foreigners. Healthcare exists but is basic; serious issues require travel to Urumqi (4+ hours). Bureaucracy is opaque and heavily state-controlled; visa sponsorship is nearly impossible outside XPCC employment. Internet is monitored.

Summers hit 40°C (104°F), winters drop to –20°C (–4°F); the Gobi Desert setting means dust storms and isolation. Food is functional Chinese canteen fare. Social life is minimal—this is a working agricultural town, not a cosmopolitan hub. The expat community is essentially nonexistent. Xinxing suits only those with XPCC employment contracts or serious research interest in Xinjiang's political economy; everyone else should look elsewhere.
