Xingqiao, China
With a population of 30,000, this Paris knockoff in China is hardly the ghost town it once was. However, the bureaucratic headaches and waning tourist appeal suggest this estate is far from a dream destination. Originally planned for 10,000 residents, Tianducheng has expanded rapidly in recent years to accommodate growing demand, though its population is still only a fraction of its intended capacity. Visitors note the buildings and monuments are "incredibly similar" to their French counterparts, but the city's charms seem to be wearing thin as more Chinese tourists opt to visit the real Paris. This Paris-inspired development may appeal to a certain middle-class resident, but most would-be expats are better off looking elsewhere.
