Tieqiao's economy revolves almost entirely around China Merchants Group's shipbuilding and port logistics operations. CMI (China Merchants Shipbuilding) dominates employment here, drawing engineers, welders, and supply-chain workers. This is heavy industrial work—not tech startups or creative freelancing. Job prospects exist if you have shipbuilding, maritime, or logistics credentials and can navigate Chinese state-enterprise hiring. Otherwise, remote work or teaching English are realistic fallbacks for most expats.

Rent runs roughly ¥2,000–3,500/month ($280–490) for a decent apartment; utilities add another ¥200–300. Public transport is minimal—you'll need a scooter or car. Healthcare exists but quality lags Shanghai; serious issues mean traveling 90 minutes to larger cities. Mandarin is essential; English is rare outside international company offices. Bureaucracy for residence permits is standard Chinese friction: expect multiple trips to local PSB and weeks of waiting. Banking and utilities setup require patience and a Chinese phone number.

Winters are cold and damp; summers humid and hot. Food is Jiangsu-style—heavy on seafood and preserved vegetables—decent but repetitive if you're not adventurous. The expat community is tiny and transient, mostly company-assigned workers. Weekends mean driving to Nantong or Shanghai (90 minutes) for anything beyond local restaurants and factories. Tieqiao suits only those with a specific job at China Merchants Group or genuine interest in industrial China; it's not a lifestyle destination.
