Tashan, China
With a population of just 59,162, the village of Tashan is hardly the bustling metropolis some expats imagine. The reality is a sleepy backwater, where the only defensive fortifications are hastily built bunkers from a bygone civil war. While the communists successfully repelled Nationalist forces here in 1948, the modern-day bureaucratic headaches are a persistent challenge.
Tashan's remote location and lack of infrastructure make it a poor choice for most foreigners seeking an overseas adventure. The climate is harsh, and the locals are understandably wary of outsiders. Unless you're a history buff eager to retrace the steps of long-dead soldiers, this town offers little to recommend it.
In short, Tashan is best left to the ghosts of China's past conflicts. Savvy expats will look elsewhere for their new home abroad.
