Taitou, China
This newly built village in China's Tianjin region offers little to recommend it. With a population of just 60,354, Taitou is a ghost town of vacant buildings and deserted commercial spaces. Though occupancy rates in the residential compound are high, the surrounding area is a wasteland of failed real estate speculation, with occupancy rates still extremely low even years after construction. The air quality can range from excellent to severely polluted, with winter months often seeing hazardous AQI levels over 300. For safety reasons, cars are barred from entering the main gate, leaving residents to navigate the area on foot, bicycle, or electric rickshaw. This is hardly an appealing prospect for anyone looking to live or work in China.
