Beijing dominates the region as China's capital and a $400+ billion economy built on finance, tech, and government. Zhongguancun is the epicenter for tech jobs; multinationals and startups cluster there. Tianjin, 120km south, is a port-driven manufacturing and logistics hub. Expats typically work for foreign companies, teach English, or run startups—local employment requires Mandarin fluency and navigating visa restrictions. Salaries are competitive but cost of living eats most gains.

Rent in central Beijing runs $800–1,500/month for a decent one-bedroom; Tianjin is 30–40% cheaper. Subway is excellent and $0.50 per ride. Healthcare is accessible but requires Mandarin or a translator; expat clinics exist but charge Western prices. Bureaucracy is real: residence permits, work visas, and bank accounts demand patience and paperwork. Air quality is a genuine problem—winter pollution spikes; check AQI daily. Winter heating is dry and brutal.

Winters are freezing and smoggy; summers are hot and humid with occasional sandstorms. Food is excellent—Peking duck, street dumplings, hotpot—and cheap. Museums and the Great Wall are world-class. The expat community is large but transient; social life clusters around bars in Chaoyang or Haidian. Weekends mean hiking, temple visits, or escaping to nearby mountains. This suits corporate expats with visa sponsorship, remote workers with savings, and Mandarin learners—not casual tourists or those allergic to pollution.
