Naxi, China

There are only around 50,000 Naxi people, so you'll be a rare foreigner in this remote corner of China. The language is a Sino-Tibetan tongue with a unique pictographic script, but good luck finding anyone who can read or write it - literacy rates are painfully low. The eastern Naxi dialects are more authentically native, but you'll have to navigate heavy bureaucracy to live outside the Lijiang area, where the language is heavily influenced by Mandarin. Overall, Naxi is an intriguing cultural enclave, but the isolation and lack of infrastructure make it a poor choice for most expats.
