Nanhu's economy runs on logistics, manufacturing, and trade. The district sits at the nexus of Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Ningbo—three of China's biggest commercial hubs—making it a distribution and light-manufacturing zone rather than a primary employment center. Most expats here work for multinational logistics firms, supply-chain companies, or remote roles; local job creation is real but heavily skewed toward Chinese speakers in factory management and port operations. Wages for expat positions are competitive but not Shanghai-level.

Rent for a one-bedroom in the center runs $380/month; outside the core, expect $250–$300. Transport is excellent—four international airports within 90 minutes, high-speed rail to Shanghai (30 min) and Hangzhou (45 min), and buses everywhere. Healthcare is adequate; major hospitals have English-speaking staff, though serious cases warrant Shanghai. Mandarin is essential; English penetration is low outside expat clusters. Residency permits and work visas require patience and a local sponsor—standard China friction, nothing unique to Nanhu.

Summers are hot and humid (32°C+), winters mild. Food is solid Zhejiang cuisine—fresh seafood, river fish, decent dumpling scene. The expat community is small and transient, mostly logistics workers on 2–3 year contracts; don't expect a thriving social scene. Weekends mean day trips to Hangzhou or Shanghai, or exploring the Grand Canal by bike. Nanhu suits remote workers seeking ultra-low cost of living and logistics professionals, not digital nomads seeking community or lifestyle.
