Luomen, China
With a population of just under 90,000, Luomen is a sleepy backwater in Wushan County, far from the glitz of China's bustling megacities. While the town has a history dating back to the Eastern Han dynasty, its economy today revolves around mundane markets for traditional medicine, mountain produce, and plaited goods. The Longhai Railway and National Highway 316 provide transport links, but the town's remote location means bureaucracy is a persistent headache.
Overall, Luomen is a nondescript provincial town with little to offer the average expat beyond a glimpse of rural Chinese life. Unless you have a specific business or personal reason to settle here, there are far more compelling destinations across the Middle Kingdom.
