With a population of just 55,442, Lanshan is a small and unassuming Chinese city that offers little in the way of excitement or opportunity for foreigners. The traditional attire worn by local scholars and officials, while historically interesting, does little to mask the persistent bureaucratic headaches that come with daily life here. Those seeking a cultural immersion experience may find the white and blue 'lanshan' robes quaint, but the lack of English fluency and western amenities is a constant challenge. Overall, Lanshan is best suited for die-hard Sinophiles undaunted by the difficulties of navigating a provincial Chinese backwater.
