Finance, tech, and logistics dominate Shanghai's economy. The Shanghai Stock Exchange is the world's fourth-largest, and the port moves more containers than almost anywhere else on Earth. Most expats work in banking, consulting, tech startups, or multinational corporate offices—salaries are competitive but so is competition. Manufacturing has largely moved inland; this is a white-collar city now. English-language job boards are active, but Chinese language skills open significantly more doors and higher pay.

Rent in central Huangpu district runs 25,000–40,000 yuan/month ($3,500–5,600) for a decent two-bedroom; outer districts drop to 12,000–18,000 yuan. The metro is excellent and cheap (3–9 yuan per ride), but rush hour is genuinely packed. Healthcare is accessible—expat clinics exist—but Chinese hospitals require Mandarin or a translator. Visa bureaucracy is real: work permits take weeks, residence permits require employer sponsorship, and rules change without warning. Pollution spikes November–January; air quality apps are essential.

Summers are hot and humid (28°C+), winters mild but gray. Food is exceptional—street dumplings, Michelin restaurants, and international cuisine all coexist. The expat community is large and established (tens of thousands), so you'll find English speakers, but that also means less incentive to learn Chinese. Weekends mean Bund walks, Jing'an temples, or day trips to Zhujiajiao water towns. Shanghai suits ambitious professionals seeking career growth and urban convenience, but expect high costs, pollution trade-offs, and bureaucratic friction.
