The airport itself employs thousands directly—ground staff, pilots, maintenance crews, customer service—plus thousands more in supporting roles: catering, cargo handling, security. Airlines (China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines, Spring) maintain major operations here. Beyond aviation, the surrounding Changning and Minhang districts host logistics companies, warehousing, and light manufacturing tied to the airport's cargo throughput. Remote work and freelancing are viable if you have stable internet; local job hunting outside aviation is competitive.

Rent near the airport runs $400–700/month for a decent one-bedroom; closer to downtown Shanghai it climbs to $800+. The metro (Lines 2, 10, 17) connects directly to the Hongqiao Hub, making commutes fast and cheap (¥2–8 per trip). Healthcare is solid—Shanghai has excellent hospitals, though expat clinics charge Western prices. Mandarin is essential for daily life; English is sparse outside international hotels and expat zones. The expat community is sizable but transient; weekends mean exploring the Bund, French Concession, or day-tripping to Zhujiajiao water town. Hongqiao itself is functional, not scenic—you're living near an airport, not in it. Best suited for aviation professionals, logistics workers, or remote workers who prioritize airport access and don't mind a utilitarian neighborhood.
