The city has also positioned itself as a tech hub since 2010, attracting software development and R&D operations. Tourism and heritage preservation drive secondary income; the Terracotta Army and archaeological sites employ thousands in hospitality and cultural sectors. Foreign workers typically find roles in education, tech companies, or multinational manufacturing operations, though competition is real and salaries lag coastal cities.

Rent runs $300–600/month for a decent one-bedroom in expat-friendly areas; utilities add another $30–50. The metro system is modern and cheap (¥2 per ride), though rush hours are brutal. Healthcare is accessible—public hospitals work but require Mandarin navigation; private clinics cater to expats. Bureaucracy is standard Chinese friction: residence permits, work visas, and banking require patience and documentation. Winter air quality dips noticeably; masks are common December through February.

Winters are harsh and dry; summers swelter with humidity. Food is excellent—spicy noodles, dumplings, street markets—and genuinely cheap.
