Hefei's economy runs on science and manufacturing. The University of Science and Technology of China and EAST fusion reactor anchor a genuine research cluster—this isn't tourism marketing. High-tech sectors (semiconductors, pharma, renewables) employ thousands. Most expats here work in research institutions, multinational tech firms, or teaching English. Salaries for skilled roles are solid; teaching gigs pay ¥15,000–25,000/month. It's a working city, not a playground.

Rent runs ¥3,000–6,000/month for a decent 2-bedroom apartment in expat-friendly areas like Luyang District. Metro exists but is still developing; most rely on taxis (cheap, ¥10–20 rides) or e-bikes.
