The population of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is a modest 691,808, but don't let the small size fool you - this remote region in southern Gansu Province is not for the faint of heart. The climate is a frigid alpine affair, with bitterly cold, dry winters that can be a persistent headache. And bureaucracy is a fact of life, with the prefecture divided into 1 county-level city and 7 counties.

Still, Gannan has its charms. The Labrang Monastery and Tibetan-majority towns offer a window into a unique culture. But be warned - this is not the place for the average expat looking for creature comforts. If you're an adventurous spirit willing to brave the elements, Gannan might be worth a look.
