Dongling, China

With a population of just 171,454, Dongling is no bustling metropolis. The Eastern Qing tombs may be an impressive imperial mausoleum complex, but for the average resident, the bureaucratic headache of navigating local government is a persistent reality. Surrounded by mountains, the town's remote location also means that access to amenities and services can be a challenge.

While the tomb complex draws visitors, Dongling itself offers little in the way of modern comforts or entertainment. This sleepy town is best suited for history buffs and those content with a slower pace of life, far from the conveniences of bigger Chinese cities.
