Daxu's economy is almost entirely dependent on agriculture and small-scale tourism. Most residents farm rice, vegetables, or work in family-run guesthouses catering to the handful of visitors who wander through the ancient stone streets. There are no major employers, no tech scene, no professional services sector. If you need income, you're either teaching English online, running a guesthouse, or freelancing for clients elsewhere—the local job market simply doesn't exist for expats.

Rent runs $200–400/month for a basic apartment; utilities add another $30–50. Transport is walking, bicycles, and occasional minibuses to nearby Guilin (45 minutes). Healthcare is basic—serious issues require travel to Guilin or Nanning. Mandarin is essential; almost no English spoken. Bureaucracy is straightforward for tourists but murky for long-term residents; visa runs to Vietnam are common. Internet is reliable but occasionally throttled. Expect frequent power cuts during summer.

Daxu offers dramatic karst scenery, quiet mornings, and genuine rural life—but winters are damp and cold, and there's little to do beyond hiking and photography. The expat community numbers maybe 20–30 people, mostly teachers or digital nomads passing through. Weekends mean exploring nearby villages, cooking at home, or day trips to Guilin. This suits only those seeking genuine isolation, low costs, and slow living; anyone wanting nightlife, career growth, or regular social contact should look elsewhere.
