Life in Damxung is a harsh reality, with a population of just 47,900 people eking out an existence in the county's rugged, earthquake-prone terrain. Almost all of the residents are engaged in the backbreaking work of animal husbandry, with herds of yaks, sheep, and goats accounting for the majority of the local economy. While the region boasts impressive natural wonders like the Namtso salt lake, the climate is bitterly cold, with an average annual temperature of only 1.3°C and a short 62-day frost-free period. Navigating the local bureaucracy, which has shifted control between monasteries, warlords, and central authorities over the centuries, is a persistent headache. This isolated corner of Tibet is best suited for the most resilient of adventurers.
