Dandong's economy revolves almost entirely around cross-border trade with North Korea, historically its lifeblood. The Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge and New Yalu River Bridge funnel goods and limited commerce through modern customs infrastructure, but international sanctions since the 2000s have gutted this sector. Manufacturing and logistics remain, but employment is tight; most expats here work for NGOs, teach English, or manage import-export operations. Expect limited job opportunities outside niche sectors.

Rent runs $300–500/month for a decent apartment; utilities add another $40–60. Public buses cost pennies, but taxis are unreliable—many expats buy cheap used bikes. Healthcare is basic; serious issues require travel to Beijing or Seoul. Mandarin is essential; English is rare outside hotels. Bureaucracy is standard Chinese friction: residence permits, work visas, and police registration are mandatory. Internet censorship applies fully. The city feels isolated, not cosmopolitan.

Winters are brutal (−10°C common), summers humid and warm. Food is Korean-influenced Chinese—decent if you like spice and fermented vegetables. The expat community is tiny, maybe 50–100 people, mostly teachers and aid workers. Weekends mean hiking the Yalu River gorge, visiting the border observation points, or day-tripping to North Korea (if permits align). Dandong suits only those with specific work reasons or genuine border-region research interests, not casual digital nomads.
