Forget the glitzy casinos and border-town bustle - living in Poipet means navigating a city with a population of 89,549 that was only recently built up for cross-border trade. While Poipet has grown rapidly from its origins of just 43,366 residents in 1998, the city's bureaucracy and safety issues are a persistent headache. Recent reports have linked the area to online scam operations and human trafficking, in addition to a deadly casino fire in late 2022. This booming border hub may appeal to gamblers and foreign workers, but for most, Poipet offers little beyond a high-risk, chaotic lifestyle.
