Tourism dominates Barreirinhas' economy almost entirely—Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is the draw, and most employment flows through hotels, tour operators, restaurants, and guides. Fishing and subsistence agriculture exist but are secondary. Job prospects for remote workers are zero; locals earn by serving visitors or working seasonally. The airport exists because of tourism, not the reverse. If you're not running a guesthouse or guiding tours, you're here as a visitor pretending to be a resident.

Rent runs $300/month for a one-bedroom in town, but utilities and internet are unreliable—power cuts happen, and broadband is spotty outside the center. Healthcare is basic; serious issues require travel to São Luís (4 hours). Portuguese is essential; English is rare outside tourist zones. Bureaucracy for residency is standard Brazilian friction: visas, tax registration, and local permits all require patience and documentation. Transport is by moto-taxi or rental car; no public transit worth mentioning.

Expect brutal heat (80–95°F year-round) and humidity that doesn't quit. The dry season (June–November) is peak tourism chaos; the wet season is quieter but muggy. Food is fresh seafood and regional Northeast fare, genuinely good. The expat community is tiny and transient—mostly digital nomads staying 2–4 weeks. Weekends mean dune tours, lagoon swims, or hammock time. This city suits adventure tourists and short-term nomads, not people seeking stability or a permanent remote-work base.
