Araci, Brazil

With a population of just 45,341, Araci is a sleepy backwater that offers little for ambitious expats. The city's religious and musical heritage, while interesting from afar, belies a provincial reality of grinding bureaucracy and limited economic opportunities. Aracy de Almeida, the city's most famous daughter, may have achieved fame as a singer, but her upbringing in a "large Protestant family" and "secrecy" around Candomblé rituals hints at the conservative social norms that persist. Unless you're content with a slower pace of life and don't mind the persistent headache of local red tape, Araci is unlikely to satisfy most foreigners' desire for an exciting new chapter abroad.
