Ajapnyak, Armenia
Living in a rapidly industrializing district isn't everyone's first choice, but 122,800 residents make it work in this northwestern chunk of Yerevan. Ajapnyak, perched on Hrazdan River's right bank, has transformed from a quiet residential area into a buzzing manufacturing hub since the 2000s, with everything from brandy distilleries to aluminum plants dotting its eastern edge.
The district's 25 km² is a stark mix of practical and progressive. While factories churn out metal pipes and dairy products, the Tumo Center for Creative Technologies and QSI International School attract a more cosmopolitan crowd. Three major parks got facelifts in the 2010s, offering some green relief from the industrial landscape. Transportation links to central Yerevan rely heavily on the Great Bridge of Hrazdan, with buses and trolleybuses handling most public transit needs. Fair warning: despite the significant Armenian Apostolic population, you won't find a single church within district borders.
